Guidelines for Use
Wireless Internet Access Service

Wireless Internet Access Service is available to registered patrons of the Aurora Public Library. All users of this service are bound to the terms of the Internet Access Service policy. Wireless Internet Access Service is limited to the standard web-browsing protocols (http and https).

Equipment

  • Staff assistance is limited to Library-owned equipment.
  • You must provide your own browser-enabled wireless device (e.g. laptop). The Library cannot guarantee that every device will be compatible with its network.
  • Your device must already have a wireless network card installed and enabled. The network card (not provided by the Library) must support IEEE 802.11 A or B or G.
  • Your laptop must have the TCP/IP protocol installed and set up to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP).
  • Printing is not available on the wireless network. If you need to print, save the file to an external storage device (i.e. floppy disk, CD, or USB drive), and then print from one the of Library’s computer workstations.

Hours of Service

Wireless service is available to users in the Library during open hours.

Logging in to the Wireless network

You will need to enter your own valid Library card number and PIN to access the wireless network.

Security

  • Use of the wireless network is at your own risk. The wireless network is not secure, as it is not encrypted. Unless additional precautions are taken, any information you send to or from your laptop, PDA, etc. could potentially be intercepted by a third party. It is your responsibility to protect your device from viruses and hackers (e.g. by up-to-date anti-virus software, firewalls, etc.)
  • The Library will not be responsible for any information (e.g. credit card numbers, PIN numbers) that is compromised, or for any damage caused to your hardware or software due to power surges, security issues, hacking, or viruses. Anti-virus and security protection are the responsibility of the user.

  • The Library is not responsible for laptops or other devices left unattended.

  • The Library recommends that all users take steps to secure their wireless devices and Internet communications by equipping them with the following items:
    • The latest service packs and security patches for your computer's operating system and software packages
    • Personal firewall software
The Library does not provide any of the above-mentioned items and cannot guarantee or otherwise be responsible for their effectiveness. It is the responsibility of the user to secure their devices and Internet communications.

Rules for use of the Wireless network

  • Users are not permitted to tamper with any equipment belonging to the Library (e.g. unplugging Library machines in order to use outlets or network cables).
  • Laptop computer users are expected to be considerate of clients nearby and are expected to use headphones when playing sound files.
  • The Library does not filter the wireless access. Users wishing filtered access should use one of the Library’s filtered public access computers or purchase and install filtering software for their personal laptop or other wireless device.
  • While using the Library's wireless network, users may not:
    • Damage or disrupt service on the Library's computer networks
    • Utilize any means to intercept other users' data

To protect its network and users, the Library reserves the right to terminate a connection at any time or to withdraw wireless access entirely.
