-> Wireless FAQ
What is Wireless?
A wireless network allows users to connect their laptops
or other wireless devices to the Internet without having
to plug into a network port.
What do I need to use the Wireless
network at APL?
- A valid Aurora Public Library card
- PIN number
- Wireless-enabled device that supports IEEE 802.11 A
or B or G.
The Library also recommends current anti-virus, anti-spyware
and personal firewall software be installed on your wireless
device.
How do I access the Wireless network?
- Ensure your wireless network card is installed
and setup to obtain an IP address by DHCP.
- Open your web browser. Accept the security certificate
that the Library's system sends. You will then be asked
to log in with your Library card number and pin. Enter
the 14-digit barcode number from your Library card, without
spaces.
- Read and accept the terms of the Library's Internet
Access Policy to use the service.
Once you have done this the Library's home page will
come up and you are ready to use our wireless system.
Is technical support available
from the Library staff?
Limited technical support is available. Support will be
limited to verifying that your Library card is valid and
that your barcode number is correct. You must be familiar
with your device and know how to set it up for wireless
access. Please ensure your wireless card is installed
and setup to obtain an address by DHCP.
If your wireless card is installed correctly and you continue
to have problems accessing the network, e-mail systems@library.aurora.on.ca
with detailed information regarding the problem. Please
include the date and time you attempted to access the network,
the error message you received, and the operating system
and browser of your wireless device.
The Library cannot guarantee that you will be able to make
a wireless connection.
When
can I use the Library's wireless network?
Wireless Internet access is available to users in the Library
during open hours.
Is there a time limit?
There is currently no time limit on how long you can use the
wireless network. However, you will be logged out of the network
after 10 minutes of inactivity.
Why does the speed of connection
vary?
The speed of the wireless connection can be affected by your
distance from the access point and the number of users on
the network at a given time.
What else could interfere with
my connection?
Wireless connects using radio waves. Any object that can cause
interference of radio can also interfere with your wireless
connection. Try moving to a different area of the Llibrary
to improve the connection.
Can I use FTP or other web services?
Only web (HTTP, HTTPS) services are available via the wireless
network. Other protocols (including, but not limited to, FTP,
SMTP, POP3, SSH and Telnet) are not available.
Is printing available from the wireless network?
Printing is not available on the wireless network. If you
need to print, save the file to an external storage device
(i.e. floppy disk, CD, or USB drive), and then print from
one the of Library’s computer workstations.
