Volunteer Opportunities

Reading Buddies Volunteer Program

Reading Buddies is a literacy-based program for children who have difficulty reading at their grade level.  Children between the ages of seven and twelve will meet in the library with a high school volunteer once a week for a one-hour session.  The sessions continue for ten weeks.
Reading Buddies is not a homework club or a child care service.  Buddies will concentrate on reading for pleasure and together, enjoy activities that promote reading and writing.  Volunteers can earn hours toward their community service while making a valuable contribution to the life of a young person.

Applications are accepted twice a year.  Volunteers must be in Grades 9-12, and must live or attend school in Aurora.

Library Pen Pals Program

Library Pen Pals is a literacy based program for children (ages 6-10) who would like to practice their writing skills by corresponding with a Teen Pen Pal.  The Pen Pals may receive 4 Community Service hours upon completion of the program.  Teen volunteers must be between the ages of 13 and 17 and must live or attend school in Aurora.

Student Community Service Program

Students may apply to the library to serve up to 20 hours of the 40 community service hours required to complete the Secondary School Diploma.  Students must attend a secondary school located within the Town of Aurora boundaries.  Also, they must be in Grades 9-12, and between 13 and 18 years of age inclusive.  Students are required to complete the application form, available at the Adult Information Desk.  Space is limited.  Students must commit to 20 hours per term and to no more than one term per school year.

If you would like to become a student volunteer, please visit the Adult Information Desk.

Visits

Aurora Public Library offers class visits throughout the year to introduce students to their local public library.  Visits are tailored specifically to the students' grade level, and teach the skills needed to do research using the wealth of resources available at APL.

As part of APL's community outreach initiative, our staff are also available to visit your school or organization, to give presentations or workshops based on your specific interest or research needs.

To book a visit please let us know at least three weeks in advance and we will be happy to accomodate you based on availability.  Please contact the Children and Young Adult Services Department at 905.727.9493 Option 5.
