What can I do with my library card?
A library card allows you to borrow books, music, DVDs and much more. You can also use it to access databases and get magazines, newspapers and journals that you won't find online, to download eBooks and eAudiobooks, and to access wireless.
Is a library card free?
Yes. Membership is free to all who live, work or attend school (K-12) in Aurora, Newmarket, Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan. The Library is primarily funded by Aurora municipal taxes. If you are not eligible for free membership, you can get a non-resident membership by paying $45 for one year.
How do I get a library card?
Adults and Teens (14 and over)
Identification with current address is required for all registrations.
Children (13 and under)
Children 13 and under must have a parent or legal guardian with them to register.
The parent or legal guardian must show identification with current address.
The parent or legal guardian is responsible for the selection, usage, and return of library material, as well as any fines or fees that may accumulate.
Do I need a library card to use the library's computers?
Yes. You need a valid library card to use a public workstation computer in the Library and for wireless access. Visitors to Aurora may show identification and access a public workstation computer with a guest card. Wireless access is available only with a valid APL card.
Why do we have to renew our memberships every year?
You will be asked to renew your library card once a year to make sure we have up-to-date contact information and that your status has not changed.
To renew your card, you need to provide name and address identification. If you have work or school related membership, proof of continued school enrolment or employment is also required at time of renewal.
If your card has expired, you can access your account but you can't place holds, renew items or check out any material.
All monies owed to the Library must be paid in full before your membership can be renewed.
What do I do if my card goes missing?
It is your responsibility to contact Circulation right away.
If your card has been turned in, you may retrieve your card from the Circulation Desk with proper ID.
The replacement fee for a lost card is $3. Identification will be required to issue a new card.
When you get a new card, your holds or materials you have checked out are not affected.
Any money you added to your card for printing is lost.
If you find your old card, you cannot resume using it.
