Borrowing, Renewing and Returning

Borrowing, Renewing and Returning

Loan Periods

The regular loan period for materials is three (3) weeks, with the following exceptions:

DVD's and videos - One (1) week
High demand materials - Two (2) weeks

Renewals

All Items may be renewed two (2) times except for:

  • DVDs and videos
  • High demand material
  • Items with requests
  • Interlibrary loans (unless authorized by the lending library)

Barring the exceptions noted above, library materials may be renewed up to two (2) times. Note that the renewal is effective from the date of renewal (not from the previous due date). Materials can be renewed in person, by phone or online. Material being renewed must be renewed before closing time on the due date. You will need your library card account number and PIN number to access your account.

Returning Material

All material may be returned to Aurora Public Library 24/7 through our outside drop box (parking lot entrance) or inside at the Circulation desk during operating hours.

Borrowing Privileges

Members (or the parent/legal guardian if the cardholder is under 18 years of age) are responsible for all material borrowed on their card. Membership cards are not transferable for use by another person.

Membership privileges will be suspended when members have fines and/or overdue materials in excess of $20 (adults) or $10 (children). Privileges will be reinstated when the charges are paid.

To borrow a DVD or video, members must be 14 years of age or older.

Overdue Notification and Courtesy Email Service

The Library offers a courtesy email notification service. You will receive an email reminder for items due two (2) days in advance of their due date. You may register for this service in person or online. See Troubleshooting Tips if you are not receiving your reminder emails.

Members will be notified either by mail or email when material is ten (10) days overdue and three (3) more times thereafter. When material is six (6) weeks overdue, members will be billed by mail for material not returned.

Delinquent accounts may be forwarded to a collection agency. An additional $15 service charge is levied for each overdue account referred to the collection agency.

Requests and Holds

Requests

If you would like an item set aside for you or if an item you would like is already checked out to another member, you may request the material in person, by phone or online.

When the material arrives, we will notify you by phone or email (per your notification preference). You will need to pick up your hold before the expiration date indicated in the notification message.

Cancelling a Requested Item

If you no longer need an item you have requested, you may cancel your request in person, by phone or online at any time. Cancelling unwanted requests is especially appreciated on high demand items with long wait lists.

Suspending a Request

If you are going away and do not want your requests to become available for pick up, you can suspend your requests until a specified date. While your requests are suspended, you will not lose your place in the queue.

Holds

When your request arrives at the Library, a hold slip will be printed and your item(s) will be placed on the Hold Shelf on the first floor near the stairs. You may pick up your hold until the expiration date specified in your notification message.

Holds are filed by the first four (4) letters of your last name, then by the last four (4) digits of your library card account number. Interlibrary loans are kept at the Circulation and Customer Service Desk. Items must be checked out before you leave the Library.
