The Perks of Being a Wallflower
By Stephen Chbosky
Viking, 1999
reviewed by Jennifer Quirke, Young Adult Services Librarian
Charlie isn't popular, but he's not exactly unpopular either - he just tends to go unnoticed because he’s a quiet, introspective guy who prefers to stand back and observe what's going on around him.
Through letters that he writes to an unknown recipient, we get to know Charlie and the way his life changes when he makes a new group of friends who expose him to new ideas and experiences. Charlie is sweet and sensitive, and you'll grow to love him as you experience his joys and sorrows along with him while he navigates his way through high school, adolescence, and life in general.
This book is has a little bit of everything, from humour to heartbreak, and it will stay with you long after you read it.
